Desolation - An Apocalyptic Novel (From Below Book 2) Page 15

“You don’t hear what?” Mallory asked.

“The creatures,” I said peering out toward the fence. The darkness was probably at least a half a mile away. “I don’t see their glowing eyes out there either.”

Mallory clapped her hands together softly. “Maybe they really are gone.”

“We can only hope,” Marty said flicking a look at Mallory. She instantly blushed. Marty stretched his arms over his head and let out a yawn that was entirely fake. “Well, I think it’s time to turn in don’t you think, Mal?”

“Yeah,” she said mimicking his yawn but her grin gave away where her thoughts had gone.

“Eww,” I said and she flapped her hand at me. “No, he’s my brother, it’s totally eww.”

Mallory stood next to Marty and wrapped her hands around his arm. Her eyelids rapidly blinking as she looked up into his eyes. “Your handsome brother.”

“Our mom always told him that too,” I teased.

“Shut up, Lucy,” Marty said wrapping his arm around Mallory’s shoulders as they slipped inside their small home.

Noah leaned forward in his chair and grunted as he stood. “I’m actually tired. I wish I had someone to take to bed with me but she’d be disappointed because I actually want to sleep.”

“Good night, Noah,” Austin said as Noah turned and walked into his house. It was only a few seconds before the lights turned off.

“Do you think we’re being too trusting?” I asked leaning closer to Austin. A cool breeze picked up and prickled my skin.

Austin shrugged. “Everyone here looks pretty happy.”

“They do,” I said watching another slightly older couple go into their small house.

The curtain was open at the side of the house and I could see a baby’s mobile hanging from the ceiling when they flicked the light on for a moment. Small cries ripped through the air stopping the instant the baby’s mom appeared. Seconds later the curtains closed and the light turned off.

“You want one of those one day?” Austin asked.

  “One of what?”

  “A baby.”

  My throat dried. “Do you?”

“Yeah, of course.” He stood and stuck his hand. “But you didn’t answer the question.”

I took his hand and stood next to him. “Someday. Yeah. If all of this comes to an end, I could see having one.”

“Yeah,” Austin said leading me toward the house. “We should probably talk marriage first anyway, right?”

I smiled as he walked into the house. I stopped and looked out into the darkness.

  “You coming?” Austin asked.

  “Yeah, one second.”

I drew in a breath of the chilly air and let it inflate my lungs. It was a cleansing breath. I looked up at the sky and closed my eyes.

There had been a lot of loss. The world around us was completely different and probably wouldn’t ever be the same.

I exhaled and turned back toward the house. We could make it a good life again. It would be up to us to rebuild and there wasn’t anyone I would have rather been with than Austin. And Marty, Noah, and Mallory.

We were going to be okay. And even though it was going to be hard, we were going to try to find some happiness in what was left.

  Marriage?

  Babies?

I didn’t know about any of that. But the possibilities brought a smile to my face. And knowing that Austin was interested in any of those things warmed my insides.

We had our guardian angels looking over us. They’d get us through whatever was thrown our way.

“Come inside. I’m getting lonely,” Austin called. The bedsprings squeaked as he lowered himself down.

I didn’t wait. Everything I wanted at that moment, was inside the house. I closed the door and locked it.
